Counseling

School counselors are must in today’s society. Unfortunately children are not all receiving the same care, guidance and counseling they should be receiving in the home from their parents. Many parents devote almost all of their time to their careers and the young children are not receiving proper guidance at home, which makes facing problems at school will be even tougher without any support.
To gain that necessary support, counseling should be supplemented. School counseling is a good idea to promote and develop. Many schools already have a counselor, but one may not be enough. Many children are unable to cope with the environment they face at school or at home and they should be able to have access to a counselor to help them face and get through any issues that arise.
A counselor is trained in dealing with children or adults and aiding them with the decisions that face them daily. It is important that the counseling provided by schools is by devoted and willing individuals who are capable of providing unbiased advice to young children. Since children are so impressionable this position is very important and the counselors that are selected should have impeccable references since they will be providing educational and personal advice for young children.
Traditionally a school counselor is there to help guide a student in their educational career path and often they will help students through each grade. They are there for support and guidance throughout the educational experience. Many students, especially recent high school graduates have little world experience and may not know what to pursue. With the help of a counselor and more importantly the appropriate counseling, the students would be able to discover options to pursue so they have a bright future.
Although counseling can be utilized in several fields, such as for marriages, relationships, summer camps for children and personal career counselors, counseling is especially needed and prevalent in the school system. Professional counseling skills are needed at every educational level, especially within grammar schools, because of the heavy influence the media has on the youth and the dropping literacy rates and lack of education in the U.S compared to other countries.
A good school counselor would be able to maintain several professional relationships at one time with multiple students, paying special attention to each of their needs and helping them to gain direction if they don’t already have it or helping them cope with any problems they face daily.
Finally, although a school counselor does focus primarily on emphasizing career development, they can provide personal advice as mentioned earlier. Often school counselors will have to provide their counseling services to children who are being bullied by other students or children who cannot cope with the pressure of fitting in socially with the rest of the students in their class.
