Obstetrics is a part of medicine that deals with the care of women and their children during a pregnancy. For a non medical equivalent there is midwifery. Those in obstetrics will see the woman during their entire pregnancy to monitor the woman and the baby. The obstetrics personnel will look for pre- existing disease and the effects it could have on the pregnancy or child.
For example diabetes, thyroid disorders and MS can all affect a pregnancy. Obstetrics is the department that will closely monitor the patients and act if necessary. Obstetrics doctors are taught to look for things like pre- eclampsia, or the cord being around the baby’s neck. Finding the right doctor can be difficult for some as you will want to feel comfortable with that person.
