Rickets
Rickets is a softening of bone in children. Though there is still a lot that needs to be known about rickets, we do know that it will lead to fractures and deformity in children if it is not under control. Rickets is the most common childhood disease, usually because these children lack vitamin D and adequate calcium. Rickets symptoms are sometimes diarrhea and vomiting, especially in the more severe cases.

Malnutrition, famine, and starvation in early childhood can lead to rickets. Children that are breast fed generally will not be affected by the disease, unless they are not exposed to some sunlight. Sun helps build up the immune system. Children with red hair may have a decreased risk for the disease, though this has not been proven.
