Physicians

Physicians today have never been more challenged. The long hours that must be accumulated to become a physician are excruciating. Not only do physicians have to attend a four year college followed by four more years of medical school, but they also have to intern for an additional three to eight years in a hospital or other facility, developing their skills and becoming the expert physicians in their field.
There are two different types of physicians, one is known as a medical doctor or M.D. and the other is a D. O. or doctor of osteopathic medicine. With these two degrees in medicine, a physician may choose to specialize in one field or another and they would be able to choose from an array of options. A physician may decide to become an anesthesiologist, which handles the injections prior to surgeries or procedures that require sedation or other types of intravenous drugs or a family doctor also known as a general practitioner. There are several other routes a physician can take into the world of specialties.. A physician may choose to focus on actually diagnosing more serious problems but usually types of medical issues that do not require invasive action. Patients who require invasive action require surgery, yet another branch of medicine that a physician can choose to practice.
To be a physician is already a challenging job, but also being a surgeon is extremely demanding and highly stressful, since the risk is higher for loss of life. Another option for a physician would be to become a general pediatrician. These physicians devote their time and effort to diagnosing and treating small children only. Other physicians fall into the category gynecology or obstetrician work. This type of physician focuses primarily on women’s healthcare issue and those that are related to only women’s healthcare.
Another group of physicians would be the psychiatrists. To be a physician in this field one must be extremely proficient in the field of mental health. Psychiatry is the branch of medicine that entails remedying issues and disorders of the mind. Those who are able to treat patients with this degree can utilize psychotherapy, psycho activated drugs and or a combination of several other techniques to almost reprogram the mind to a more healthy outlook. If a physician does not fall into any of these categories for specialization they could also become radiologists, who examine x-rays of patients, or cardiologists, who deal with issues and complications to the heart, or dermatologists who deal with the skin. Several other types of physicians include but are not limited to gastroenterologists, ophthalmologists, and pathologists. To be a physician in any of these fields is challenging but some of them require more risk than others which in turn, creates more stress for the physicians who dedicate their time to specialize in one of more of these related fields. Most physicians seem to be private doctors with their own practice or they are practicing in health clinics. Specialists or physicians who choose to devote all their effort to one branch of medicine tend to hold their own practice as well or are on staff at local hospitals with an on-call option to serve their patients when absolutely necessary.
